2006: Weekley is the last of the field within hailing distance of Garcia and he closes with two pars for an excellent round of 68.

1948: Brett Quigley headed down the last at two under but a triple bogey left him with only a 72.

1929: Weekley makes his par at 16 and remains -3.

1926: The Spaniard holds his nerve and trundles home his putt for a four and splendid round of 65. Only one dropped shot, seven birdies and Garcia seems certain to be two shots clear come the end of day one.

1924: Garcia shows wonderful control from the sand and leaves himself a putt of six or seven feet for a closing par.

1921: Tony Jacklin, winner in 1969, rolls back the years with a delightful approach to set up birdie. The 63-year-old is currently +6.

1915: Garcia's approach to 18 sounds a little heavy and the Spaniard's exasperated shout whilst the ball is in the air tells the story. It comes down in the bunker to the right of the green and our leader has it all on to escape with a par.

1908: Weekley's charge gathers more pace as he holes a 20-footer for birdie on 15 to move up to -3.

1907: Sergio responds to his setback on 16 in the best possible way as a wonderful iron and confident putt secure his seventh birdie of what is becoming an increasingly memorable round. He's -6 and two clear once again.

1903: Having been forced to hack out with his second, Mickelson has to settle for bogey at 18 and a level-par 71. Playing partner Westwood produces a fine up and down from the sand to match the American's 71.

1859: American Boo Weekley taps home for the fourth birdie of his round at 14 and climbs up to -2.

1856: It's a good strike from Garcia on 16, but his par-putt just misses on the low side so the Spaniard's lead is back to one at -5.

1852: Mickelson is currently -1, but a wayward drive - a rarity from the American today - means he's going to be struggling to finish in red numbers.

1848: Garcia finds sand at the par-three 16th and, despite a decent bunker shot, faces a testing putt for par.

1845: After his travails Vijay finishes with a double-bogey six on 18 for a 72.

1842: Miguel Angel Jimenez is home with a two-under-par 69. Stenson, like many today, finishes with two fives for a level-par 71.

1836: The three-ball of Singh, Aaron Oberholser and Brian Davis give the galleries down 18 plenty of excitement. Oberholser clatters into the crowds on the left before seeing his ball bounce back down into some television cables suspended just above the Barry Burn. Singh slices his second way into the granstand on the right, while Davis sees his low skidder jump over the burn and pull up just short of the bunker.

1830: Westwood can do no better than bogey on 17 and is back to level-par. McIlroy takes two putts for a par down the last to confirm a splendid round of 68. The youngster becomes the first player today to have gone round without dropping a shot - fabulous effort.

1827: The fearless McIlroy flies a glorious two-iron some 240 yards at 18 to set up yet another birdie chance. The teenager really has been a breath of fresh air today.

1822: Sergio tidies up for his birdie at the 14th and moves to -6.

1820: Furyk takes three from the edge of the 18th green to finish with a bogey-five. That's a round of 80 and, as he always seems to do, the American has tip-toed his way into contention. Playing partner Dougherty makes a par down the last for an opening 71.

1815: Garcia's blade really is running hot, his 50-60 footer for eagle at 14 only narrowly misses but leaves a tap-in for birdie that will take him two clear.

1812: Stenson is rather over-aggressive with his par-putt at 17 and surrenders one, he's back to -1.

1809: Having found a very awkward spot in the sand on 18, Harrington produces a miraculous up and down to escape with a par and fine round of 69. The Irishman came home in just 33, that's as good as anyone today.

1805: Westwood had been battling away gamely without much reward, but that all changes on 15 when his 180-yard second pitches, runs on to the green and then up to and into the hole for an eagle two. It never looked anywhere else! The Englishman is now in the red at -1 and kisses the ball as he retrieves it from the hole.

1800: Cabrera taps in for his par on 18 to complete a very promising opening round of 68. Can the big Argentine make it back-to-back majors?

1758: Garcia grabs the outright lead as he drains another putt on 13. The Spaniard is now -5 and really does seem determined to put the record straight here after his nightmare in '99.

1757: Dougherty has lost a couple on the back nine and is back over-par at +1.

1751: A fantastic second from Mickelson at 14 sets up an excellent eagle chance for the American, but he has to settle for a birdie as his putt stays out on the high side. Donald also misses a short putt, his is for par on 18 and means he has to content himself with an opening 70.

1746: Garcia seizes a share of the lead as he rolls one in from 15 feet on 12 to move to -4. It could get even better for the Spaniard as his tee-shot at 13 stops six or seven feet from the hole.

1742: Having races into a share of the lead with four consecutive birdies, Sato reels off four successive bogeys to fall back to level-par after 12 holes.

1737: A bogey at 16 returns Donald to -2, while world number two Mickelson is playing steady par golf and is level through 13. Daly is home with a 74 having suffered a meltdown of sorts. After taking the lead with his eagle at 12 he managed to lose eight shots over his last six holes.

1732: Vijay joins the party on -2 as he makes an eagle three on 14. A simply fantastic iron presents McIlroy with another short putt to tie the lead, but once again he cannot convert and remains -3.

1730: Garcia fires in a wonderful approach to ten feet at 11, but it's the same old story as his putt to tie the lead lacks conviction and falls away on the low side.

1726: Els finishes with two bogey-fives for a round of 72. It could have been much better for the 2002 champion.

1722: Westwood is +1 through 11, Daly has fallen further back and stands +2 through 16, while in-form Fasth continues to toil at +3 through 14.

1717: A booming second from Stenson at 14 sets up an eagle chance although the Swede is more than happy to walk away with a birdie that lifts him back to -2. Playing partner Jimenez also makes birdie to join him at -2, but McIlroy cannot follow suit and his short putt to tie the lead just slides past.

1714: Apologies Padraig, we put the mockers on him there as his putt stays out on the high side, he remains -2.

1710: Sergio is creating plenty of chances today and encouragingly his putter seems to be running hot, it certainly is at ten as he sinks a 30-footer to move to -3. He looks likely to be joined there by Harrington very shortly as the Irishman produces a magnificent approach at 15 that pulls up some four feet from the hole.

1706: Els misses from close range with the putter at 17 and is back to level-par, he's never quite got going today. Hanson finishes with two bogeys for a 70, but that's still a very decent start for the Swede.

1700: Some big names are now beginning to make their move as playing partners Harrington and Toms produce matching birdies fours at 14 to go -2. Cabrera sinks a hugely impressive putt at 15 and is now -3, where he is joined by Taniguchi who picks up another shot at 11.

1654: McIlroy's sensational performance continues as the 18-year-old sends his tee-shot to six-foot on 13 before draining the putt for a birdie two. The teenager is level with Donald and Sato on -3 with the Japanese player having dropped his first shot of the day at eight.

1651: Cabrera joins the group at -2, while Els gets down in two putts from the best part of 80-90 feet at 16 to stay -1.

1646: A birdie two at 13 for Furyk, the American returns to -2 and replaces Stenson who is back to -1 after his bogey at 12.

1640: Donald makes it back-to-back birdies with a four at 14 and edges up to -3 in the process. Daly is in reverse gear and lets another go at 15, that's six shots dropped in the space of four holes.

1635: Harrington is into the red with a long birdie putt at 13, while Fasth picks one up at 11 to move back to +2.

1630: Sato sinks a short one for birdie on six and grabs a share of the lead on -4 in the process.

1626: Having led on -5 a matter of three holes ago, Daly produces a triple-bogey at 14 and has now dropped back to level-par in the blink of an eye. Frustratingly inconsistent he may be, but you are always guaranteed action when 'Wild Thing' is around.

1622: Garcia makes a birdie-four at six to move level with the likes of McIlroy and Stenson, but Cabrera surrenders one at 12 to fall back to -1.

1618: Northern Irish amateur Rory McIlroy has been touted as a star of the future, but he's proving a star of the present at Carnoustie with his second birdie of the day at ten taking him up to -2.

1615: A wonderful short iron at the par-three 13th allows Donald to make amends for his dropped shot and he's instantly back to -2. Els makes the most unlikely of birdies on 14, having found sand off the tee and thick rough with his second, he produces a fine up and down to get himself back under-par.

1611: Having already birdied three and four, Japan's Achi Sato rolls home another putt on five to move to -3. The big smile says it all, a great start. Compatriot Toru Taniguchi is only one shot behind on -2.

1608: Daly does well to prevent the wheels falling off at 13, holing a ten-footer for par. It's a par-five up next for the American and, as always, he'll fancy his chances there.

1605: Donald drops his first shot of the day at 12 to fall back to -1. It's the same story for Furyk at ten and he too now finds himself -1.

1601: Mickelson is back to level-par as he takes advantage of the sixth which has proved a veritable birdie haven so far today. David Toms has worked his way to -1 despite an early bogey.

1557: Hanson moves to -3 as he taps home from close range for a four on the par-five 14th. He is joined by Daly whose problems at eleven eventually result in a double-bogey six.

1552: Amateur Richie Ramsay has enjoyed plenty of support, but the Scot has now slipped back to +2 after bogeys at eight and ten. That's still two better than Welshman Bradely Dredge who is enduring a miserable day.

1549: Daly finds rough and then more rough at eleven and has it all on to make par. Harrington is back at level after his first birdie of the tournament at nine.

1545: A straight hitter and model of consistency, Furyk was many people's choice this week and the quiet American is going about his business in typically understated buteffective style. He makes birdie at both seven and nine to move to -2. Up ahead Glover pays the penalty for a couple of errant shots and a three-putt with a double-bogey six at 12, he's back to -1.

1540: Swedes Stenson and Peter Hanson are both going along very nicely at -2 having made birdies at seven and 13 respectively. Compatriot Fasth has also got one back and is now +2.

1537: Nick Dougherty - leading Englishman at last month's US Open - has had a topsy-turvy start to his round but is now -1 through eight. The Liverpudlian has mixed a bogey and a double-bogey with four birdies thus far.

1533: Daly claims the outright lead in outrageous style at the 11th. The big-hitting American shows the more delicate side to his game as a gentle wedge skips up to the hole and straight in for an eagle two. 'Wild Thing' is rolling back the years and is now out on his own at -5.

1529: Miguel Angel Jimenez joins Donald at -2 after claiming the second birdie of his round at the par-five sixth.

1526: Donald reaches the turn in 34 and is continuing the fine form he showed at Loch Lomond last week.

1522: Garcia's birdie putt at three goes agonisingly close, but he will be delighted nonetheless with a very solid birdie-par-par start. Austrian Markus Brier gets up and down from the sand at 18 to complete a fine 68, he joins Campbell on -3 in the clubhouse.

1517: Westwood bogeys three and sees a birdie putt lip out at four, he remains level-par. Daly's charge gathers yet more pace as he birdies ten to join the group on -3.

1513: Henry's playing partner Paul McGinley brings the curtain down on his opening round with a solid par and claims the clubhouse lead on -4. Super effort from the Irishman.

1509: JJ Henry drops one at 18, but that's no disgrace as it's currently playing the most difficult hole on the course. The American is in with a 70.

1503: Very uncharacteristic three-putt from Mickelson sees him drop a shot at three. A fine approach looked to have set up a birdie chance, but he borrowed too much on his first and then contrived to miss from little more than two or three feet meaning he heads to the fourth tee +1 and probably more than a little annoyed. Els bogeys ten and is back to level-par.

1500: Fasth's poor start continues as he bogeys five to fall back to +3, but Cabrera is heading in the opposite direction as he leaves himself a matter of inches for birdie at seven and duly rolls home to climb to -2.

1456: Australian Richard Green joins the posse on two-under with birdie at nine. The group also includes 'Wild Thing' John Daly who picks up strokes at both five and six.

1451: Garcia flies in a wonderful iron to no more than five feet and makes birdie at the first. He'll be hoping he can get the ball that close all week, either that or he's going to have to get his putter firing for the first time in goodness knows how long.

1448: Padraig Harrington drops an early shot with a bogey-five at two, but three consecutive pars then serve to steady the ship. Harry has been tipped up by many this week and is as well-equipped as any European to break the continent's major drought.

1445: Cink matches the 69s of Woods and Choi to sit one back of clubhouse leader Campbell. Donald sees another birdie putt shave the hole at seven, but it stays out and he remains -2.

1442: Sergio Garcia tees off and finds the middle of the first fairway. The Spaniard will be hoping to lay a few ghosts this week after leaving this course in tears the last time the Open was held here in 1999.

1439: US Open champion Cabrera is in red figures as he makes abirdie-three at four. He's joined at -1 by Furyk who picks up a shot at two.

1435: Glover creeps up to -3 with another birdie at seven and is now only one back of the lead as McGinley makes successive bogeys to drop back to -4. The Irishman could do with a couple of pars to steady the ship now.

1431: In-form Niclas Fasth had plenty of support going into the event given his excellent recent form, but it's far from an ideal start as a double-bogey six at the second sees him sitting at +2 through three. Better news for fellow Swede Henrik Stenson who opens with a birdie-three and two pars.

1428: Lee Westwood strokes home a 15-foot putt on the first to open with a birdie, playing partner Phil Mickelson has to settle for a par after his lengthy putt just fails to break sufficiently. Vijay Singh birdies the second to join Westwood on -1.

1422: It's a first blemish on McGinley's card as his par-putt slips past. A bogey five and he's back to five-under.

1417: McGinley has around five feet left for par on the 15th hole.

1411: Angel Cabrera gets under par with a birdie putt on the 4th as McGinley comes up short on the 15th with his second shot but in not great danger.

1408: Poor end for Rose and a double bogey up the last means a 75 to start. Els goes to -1 thanks to a birdie on the 6th.

1407: Woods' effort for birdie just shaves the hole and he is round in 69. He will be more than happy with that effort.

1406: 1999 champion Lawrie closes with a birdie for a round of 73.

1405: Rose's par putt on the 18th is always wide and he still has five feet for a bogey. McGinley finds the 15th fairway from the tee.

1402: McGinley's putt finds the back lip of the cup and topples in and he is all of a sudden three clear of the pack.

1401: McGinley hits a lovely chip on the 14th and he has a great chance to go to six under for the round.

1401: Woods hits his second to the 18th from 230 yards with a three iron and a beautifully flighted iron finds the heart of the green to give him a putt for a 68.

1400: Rose playes his third from way back on the 18th and despite cries of 'go' by the Englishman, the ball clears any trouble and lands on the green.

1358: Brier's round gets better on the 13th as he rolls in another birdie to reach three under. Donald makes back-to-back birdies and he is two under all of a sudden.

1354: Rose lets his tee-shot on the last leak away to the right and it takes a couple of bounces before trickling into the burn.

1353: Luke Donald makes his first venture in the right direction and makes a birdie on the third. McGinley's second on the 14th is safe while Woods' final tee-shot of the day finds the very left edge of the fairway.

1351: Big par putt for Rose on the 17th but he makes a rather timid effort and it misses on the right and he slips to +2.

1350: Woods misses his birdie putt on the 17th but he safely taps in for par.

1346: McGinley's tee shot down the 14th is down the right and just creeps into the light rough. Rose plays a fine bunker shot on 17 to within four feet of the pin.

1345: Lawrie hits a good second to 17 and ends up around 25 feet left of the flag. Nick Faldo holes a long putt on the 18th for a round of 79 while McGinley now leads by two at -5 after holing on the 13th for a two.

1342: Woods hits five iron for his second to the 17th and the ball bounces on the front of the green and rolls about 20 feet beyond the flag. Rose comes up short and finds the front-right trap.

1340: Markus Brier makes a birdie on the 11thand he is two under. Furyk safely finds the first green in regulation.

1339: McGinley is on the 13th tee and he hits another great shot to within about 10 feet of the flag on the par three.

1337: Long iron for Woods from the 17th tee-box and he finds the fairway comfortably. Rose also takes an iron and he is also on the short stuff.

1336: Good up and down on the 16th by Rose to remain at +1. His compatriot Nick Dougherty splits the fairway on the first hole.

1334: The reliable Jim Furyk gets started down the first and unsurprisingly he hits the fairway. Paul Casey completes his first round in 72 thanks to a birdie-par finish.

1331: Woods holes a monster putt on the 16th for birdie - the first of the day - to move back to two under.

1327: Donald leaves the first with a par under his belt, as does US Open champion Angel Cabrera.

1323: It's an opening 72 for Howell - not bad at all after his bogey-bogey-double start. Casey makes a very timely birdie at 17 to climb back to +1 following bogeys at 14 and 16, while Pouletr is also +1 having dropped shots at 12 and 13.

1318: Ernie gives one back at three to return to level-par, while playing partner Glover narrowly misses out on a third consecutive birdie as his putt sniffs the hole but stays above ground. Cink is up to -3 after birdie on the short 13th.

1314: Bjorn returns a highly-promising 70, but poor finishes cost both Leonard and DiMarco dear. Leonard drops three shots in his final four holes, while DiMarco ends bogey-bogey to match his compatriot's 74.

1309: Two good putts from Goosen ensure he finishes with an opening 70, but it's not such a solid finish for Jacquelin. The Frenchman was -1 as he stood on the 18th tee, but contrived to take a quadruple-bogey eight to end up on +3.

1305: Paul Broadhurst produces back-to-back birdies at four and five to join Beem and two other Americans, Stewart Cink and Lucas Glover, at -2.

1301: The clubhouse lead has changed hands again as Campbell makes par at 18 to cap off an excellent opening round of 68. Six birdies mixed with the three bogeys for the New Zealander. McGinley holes a ten-footer for par at the tenth to keep his nose in front on -4.

1259: Darren Clarke rolls home from six feet to secure his par on 18 and put the seal on a first round of 72. It's a terrific effort if you consider he was +4 through six holes, it was birdies and pars all the way home from there.

1257: Luke Donald makes a pleasing start as his three-wood from the first tee finds the left-centre of the fairway.

1254: At one stage this morning Tiger looked like he was going to devour Carnoustie, but he's gone off the boil at the moment and is lucky to see a wayward second at 14 just avoid the 'Spectacles' bunkers. Playing partner Rose remains on level-par along with Poulter, while Paul Lawrie is going along steadily at +1.

1249: Ernie Els is heavily-fancied by many to go well this week and the 2002 champion makes the best possible start as he produces a birdie three at the first.

1246: Tiger cannot make his par at 13 and is back to -1, but McGinley reaches the turn in a best-of-the-day 32 and remains one-shot clear on -4.

1242: Monty sees another birdie chance go begging at 11, he really is lacking conviction with his putter.

1241: Campbell holes another fine putt at 17 to edge himself back to -3 after a bogey-four at the short 16th. KJ Choi has completed his round and becomes the first man to break 70. He finishes with a bogey to stand on -2, but the Korean will be more than happy with his start.

1240: Casey'srun of nine straight pars comes to an end at 14 as he makes bogey to drop back to +1.

1236: It's double-bogey-bogey for Goosen who slips back to -1, while Tiger takes three from no real distance at all to make bogey at 12 and then pulls his tee-shot at the par-three 13th into sand.

1231: Swede Fredrik Hed Andersson (-3) becomes the third man of the day to record an eagle at the par-five sixth - there were none in 1999. While maybe not a pussycat, Carnoustie certainly doesn't seem to be the fearsome beast that led to the "Carnasty" moniker last time around.

1227: American Rich Beem has birdied five, six and seven to join Tiger and Choi on -3.

1223: Goosen's serene progress is rudely interrupted by a double-bogey six at 15. The South African found more sand, but was unable to extricate himself on this occasion and three putts mean he drops back to -2.

1218: Pampling is back in with a 70, but will be kicking himself having dropped one down the last.

1215: Paul McGinley has grabbed a share of the lead with a birdie-three at seven. The Irishman has plenty of links experience and is making good use of it here, he looks right on top of his game.

1212: Scottish Open winner Havret has burst to life with birdies at five and six, the Frenchman is now -1. That's level with Verplank, amongst others, who gave back two shots at the ninth after squeezing one off the toe-end of his recovery iron and into a bush.

1206: Sterne, Ogilvy, Scott and Faldo have all slumped back to +4, while Frenchman Gregory Bourdy has set the clubhouse lead on -1 with a very respectable round of 70.

1203: Darren Clarke is excelling himself on the back nine and a birdie at 14 has him back to +1. Goosen splashes out well from the sand at 14 and still comes within a whisker of birdie as his subsequent putt pulls up just inches short of the hole.

1157: Just as at Augusta and Oakmont, Rose is again going well and a birdie at nine moves him up to -2. However, he has to settle for bogey at ten as his par-putt from distance creeps past on the low side. Tiger also made a three at nine and is back to within a shot of the lead at -3.

1154: Conditions are improving at Carnoustie, the rain seems to have abated and many players have now shed their jackets. Campbell is right back in the mix at -3 after consecutive birdies at 13 and 14, but behind him Goosen finds trouble as his second to the par-five 14th finds the 'Spectacles' bunkers.

1150: Some early starters are back in the clubhouse with Brazilian Adilson Da Silva, Australian Peter Fowler and American Matt Kuchar the pick so far with 74s. Vaughan Taylor did not fare so well and the American can start thinking about his flight home on Friday after a miserable eleven-over-par 82.

1145: We have a new leader. Choi can do no better than bogey at 15 and Goosen takes full advantage as he drains a birdie putt for a two at 13 to move clear at -4.

1142: Trevor Immelman is putting together a very nice round and a second birdie of the day at nine ensures he hits the turn in 34, (-2). DiMarco is proving rather more erratic and bogeys at ten, twelve and thirteen drop the American back to +1.

1137: Monty is briefly back to level as he birdies the par-five sixth, but another short putt goes begging at seven and he's straight back into black figures. The Scot will be looking for a new flat-stick before long if this continues.

1133: Goosen continues his stealthy ascent of the leaderboard with a birdie at 13. The South African is -3 and is joined by Verplank who picks up a shot at seven.

1129: Poulter looks away in disgust whilehis tee-shot at eight is in the air, but it just creeps over the bunker at the front of the green and rolls on handsomely to leave him a ten-footer for birdie. He'll be delighted when he reachs the green.

1126: French golf is on a high at the moment and Raphael Jacquelin increases the feel-good factor with a delightful tee-shot at the par-three 13th. It leaves a virtual gimme for a birdie to move him to -2.

1122: Leader Choi has a large slice of fortune at the par-five 14th as his wayward second clatters into the grandstand and back out and into a decent spot. He could still make birdie from there. Tiger surrenders a shot at eight having found a greenside bunker - it's a decent recovery from the sand, but his par-putt slides by.

1119: A second bogey in three holes and Campbell is back to -1. It's been an interesting start for Markus Brier who has yet to record a par after four holes. The Austrian has gone birdie-bogey-birdie-birdie and stands -2.

1115: Casey has been solid rather than spectacular and reaches the turn in level-par following a run of five straight pars. Monty remains +1 and is still looking for his first birdie, but Poulter is back under-par after picking up a shot at six.

1111: Tiger's birdie putt at seven lips out so he stays at -3. Compatriot Scott Verplank has been going about his business quietly and efficiently and a second birdie of the morning at six moves him to -2.

1106: Much-needed birdie for Clarke at 11, he's +2.

1105: McGinley's magic start continues, he's now gone three-three-four-three to join Woods on -3. However, that's one shot back of Choi who calmly slots his birdie putt at 13 to pull clear once again on -4.

1100: Pampling responds to his bogey with a birdie at 13, while Choi gives himself every chance of a birdie-two at 13 with a cracking tee-shot.

1056: Tiger rolls home his eagle putt and from nowhere has a share of the lead, it took him six holes to get to the top of the leaderboard, will anyone be able to shift him from there now? Rose is back under-par for the day having drained his birdie putt and will be more than satisfied with his start.

1053: Pampling drops his first shot of a very tidy opening round at 12 and is back to -1.

1051: Tiger looks in ominously good form and a wonderfully-controlled high draw with a six-iron sets up a very presentable eagle chance at six. Playing partner Rose shows a delicate touch from just off the front of the green and leaves himself three feet for birdie.

1048: Choi is back in the lead on his own as Campbell drops one at ten having found the greenside bunker.

1045: Not the best start for world number five Adam Scott who finds himself +2 through five. A birdie four at the par-five sixth for Faldo means he is also +2, as is 1996 champion Tom Lehman.

1041: Richard Sterne was tipped by many to go well this week, but a double-bogey six at the tenth has dropped the South African back to +2. Last week's winner at Loch Lomond, Gregory Havret, can do no better than a bogey five at the first.

1035: Paul McGinley is underway in some style with a pair of threes catapulting him up to -2. Rose has responded well to his double-bogey and holds his nerve to sink a testing ten-footer for par at five, he remains level-par.

1030: Monty drops one at three and is joined at +1 by Howell who reaches the turn in 37 after another bogey at nine.

1024: Tomohiro Kondo of Japan might not be a household name, but he's up amongst the early leaders having opened with birdies at one and two.

1021: Faldo comes up with his third bogey of the morning at fiveand is already +3. Canada's Stephen Ames, who looked so good for so long at last month's US Open, already has three sixes on his card and is +5 through six.

1017: Bjorn is -1 after consecutive birdies and, having done likewise, Goosen has joined the group on -2. The South African always seems to come alive when the majors come around.

1012: DiMarco is on a roll and having now gone eagle-birdie-birdie finds himself just one shot back of playing partner and joint leader Campbell.

1008: Tiger taps home for his par at four to remain -1, a very satisfactory start for the world number one. Rose's rollercoaster continues as he makes birdie to haul himself back to level-par.

1002: Howell has fought back from his awful start in tremendous style and birdies at six, seven and eight mean he is now back to level-par. Bjorn is also level after picking up a shot at six, while Goosen and DiMarco are both now -1.

0957: Leonard smoothly rolls home a five-footer for birdie at six and is just a shot off the pace at two-under. Monty's birdie putt at two ambles up to the hole but refuses to drop and he'll have to content himself with another par.

0955: Tiger duly taps home for his birdie at three to move -1, but both Lawrie and Rose make double-bogey after their troubles. 2005 US Open champion Campbell joins Choi at -3 with his third birdie of the day at six.

0953: Choi bogeys seven to drop back to three-under, but it's much better news for DiMarco who makes an eagle three at six to haul himself back to level-par.

0949: Having seen playing partners Lawrie and Rose both spin their approaches back off the green into the stream protecting the front of the third green, Tiger judges his second to perfection and leaves four feet for his first birdie of the championship.

0944: Clarke endures a nightmare at the sixth and walks away +3 after a double-bogey.

0941: Casey bounces back with a birdie at four and is level once again, but Monty ruins his fine work by pushing his birdie putt past on the high side. An opening four, but he'll be annoyed about that.

0938: Tiger sees another birdie opportunity go begging at the second and has to settle for a four when he could so easily have opened with a pair of threes. Monty produces a delightful approach to the first to leave no more than three feet for birdie.

0935: Ian Poulter sinks an eight-footer for birdie at the first and his three is matched by playing partner Mike Weir.

0932: Colin Montgomerie steps on to the first tee to rapturous applause and responds by bisecting the first fairway with his opening drive. Choi is setting a blistering pace as a neat chip sets up a birdie at the par-five sixth to take the in-form Korean to -4.

0929: Weaver's dream start is tempered by bogey at three, while Nick Faldo and Paul Casey have made bogeys at two and three respectively to fall back to +1. Bourdy drops one at nine and is straight back to -1.

0924: Tiger's birdie putt slides by, but Justin Rose does make a three to head to the second tee -1.

0922: Pampling birdies six to climb to -2, a very solid start from the Australian.

0917: An early indication that the rough is not what is was back in 1999 as Lawrie is able to find the heart of the green with his second at the first despite being well off the fairway. Tiger is pin-high with his approach and will have ten feet for an opening birdie.

0913: Graeme Storm has been in good form of late, but hits the turn in 38 (+2) as he makes his third bogey of the day at nine.

0910: Tiger is out with the three-iron on the first tee and findsthe first cut down the left-side of the fairway. 1999 champion Paul Lawrie gives the galleries an early scare as he sprays his tee-shot some way right, but it's straight down the middle for Justin Rose.

0906: Campbell picks up his second shot of the day at four to join Weaver at -2 and the twosome promptly becomes a threesome as Gregory Bourdet makes a birdie two at eight. They're still one shot back of Choi who continues to make the early running.

0901: Three-time champion Nick Faldo is underway with a par-four, while Weaver has made it back-to-back birdies at the second to climb to -2.

0858: Chris DiMarco finished second last year, but has not made the start he would have wanted as bogeys at two and three drop him back to +2. Retief Goosen bogeys the second and is +1, but American amateur Drew Weaver is heading in the other direction as an early birdie sees him to -1.

0851: Paul Casey starts with a par four down the first, but it's an awful start for Howell who makes double-bogey at three to slide to +4 after just three holes. A birdie at four means he gets one back immediately, but he's already plenty to do.

0845: Choi has started like a train, he's now birdied three and four to move two clear on -3. Australian Geoff Ogilvy has opened with a birdie at the first to join the group on -1.

0834: Birdies on the first for Michael Campbell and Justin Leonard.

0826: David Howell bogeys the second and is +2

0825: Pampling makes birdie at the third to join the lead on -1 while American John Rollins also reaches that score with a par-birdie start.

0817: It is back to four players in a share for the lead after Bourdy drops a shot at the fifth to go back to level. Darren Clarke makes a bogey five at his first hole.

0815: Oliver Wilson was -2 after three holes but a run of six, five, seven from the fourth has seen him collapse to three over in the blink of an eye.

0812: Choi and Sterne par the second to stay at -1. Early leader David Coupland suffers back-to-back double bogeys on numbers two and three and is now +3.

0806: Vaughn Taylor is the real struggler early on and he starts four, five, seven to be +4 through three holes. Stuart Appleby makes a solid start though and birdies the first to join the cluster of players at -1.

0800: England's David Howell drops a shot at the first hole.

0755: All change at the top and there are suddenly four players under par. Da Silva has played four holes and he is joined on -1 by Gregory Bourdy (4), Richard Sterne and KJ Choi, the latter two having both birdies the first.

0753: Storm picks up the shot he dropped on the third and is now back to level.

0748: Some more familiar names coming up over the next few groups and among those to make a par at the first is Aussie Rod Pampling. He is the player who memorably led after the first round here back in 1999 but then managed to miss the cut as the weather closed in.

0739: Coupland's stay at the top does not last long as a six at the second sees him drop from -1 to +1. We have a new leader in the shape of little-known Brazilian Adilson Da Silva, who makes a birdie on the third to go one under.

0735: Kevin Stadler doubles his third hole and is +2 as the course and conditions start to bite. Graeme Storm is +1 through three holes.

0732: Wilson's golden run comes to an abrupt halt when he double bogeys the fourth hole to drop back to level. Amateur David Coupland can enjoy his moment in the limelight as he leads the Open on his own at one under.

0700: The second group head off the opening green with all three making par.

0647: The opening group complete the first hole with Oliver Wilson making a perfect start and recording a birdie three. Joe Durant and Ben Bunny both make a par.

0626: Welcome to the opening round of the 136th Open Championship at Carnoustie. Bleak conditions greet the players with drizzle and cool temperatures to start the day.
